HOWL director Paul Hyett interview

Exclusive!

Paul Hyett Interview
Paul Hyett on the set of HOWL

Q: Looking back on the production of HOWL, what stands out for you in terms of the directorial experience?

It was a real learning experience with the sheer number of VFX shots. And what I can do on set to make the VFX guys workload easier, for example, getting practical plate shots. Also, working on a green screen set. I think that’s what made it stand out to me, the pure logistical way of filming on a train set build, on a green screen set with hundreds of visual effects and tying everything together so it works.

Q: HOWL was your second feature as director, following the dark and controversial THE SEASONING HOUSE. What was behind the decision to make such a distinct genre shift?

I already knew the producers Ed King and Martin Gentles from actually being up for the job of making the werewolf prosthetics and suits. At the same time the original director left, they had watched THE SEASONING HOUSE as opening film at FrightFest 2012, so they asked to think about taking over the directorial reins, which I jumped at the chance to.

Paul Hyett Interview
Howl

Q: Would you like to make another Werewolf inspired movie?

If a good werewolf script came along I would definitely think about it. When I read a script, for me it’s all about story and characters.

Q: HOWL, like THE SEASONING HOUSE, THE CONVENT (HERETIKS) and PERIPHERAL, have all received world premieres at FrightFest. What is it about the festival that makes it so important to launch your films there?

Paul Hyett Interview
Paul Hyett with Sean Pertwee at the FrightFest premiere of THE SEASONING HOUSE

My relationship with Frightfest goes back nearly two decades. It feels like my extended family. I think it’s the best way to introduce your film to the world. The audiences are smart as well as supportive. I think the coverage is important, its hard to get your film out there and noticed. Frightfest is a natural springboard. And the support is so well appreciated. And also you have a really fun time there!

Q: Even though you’re a master of visual effects, you’ve gone on record as saying that the most important aspect of filmmaking for you in the storytelling. Can you elaborate?

Above all the visual effects, practical effects, CGI, the most important part is the storytelling, the narrative structure, the characters. Everything else comes second. You have to be invested in the characters, you need to be immersed in the story, otherwise no matter what you do visually, you won’t care, it will just feel flat. If you care about a character which is killed, then it stimulates an emotional reaction in you. The effect itself will feel a lot more powerful with those emotions.

Q: We hear you were about to make another film when the pandemic broke. What can you tell us?

I was in Cape Cod, doing recces for a film called ‘UNNATURAL SELECTION, a kind of John Carpenter / Stephen King, New England type vibe. We were looking for locations and about to start casting. The pandemic really put us into a hiatus. But we’re working on getting it restarted.

Q: Has the continuing lockdown restrictions affected or influenced your creative process?

It’s certainly made me disciplined about working at my desk at home. In lockdown there were no real distractions, you couldn’t go anywhere, do anything, so you might as well just sit and work. Writing, concept designing, developing. Otherwise you can go mad, you need a focus, a reason to get up. For people on furlough, at home, without work to do must have been really hard. I’m lucky, anyone that can work from home is lucky.

Paul Hyett Interview
Howl

Q: Have any horror films caught your eye this year?

I really enjoyed ARMY OF THE DEAD, it was actually what it said on the tin. Intense fun, ultra gore and zombie tigers, what more could you want?

Q: Have you ventured back into a cinema yet?

Yes once! To see the new ‘The Conjuring’ movie..

Q: Any future plans you can tell us?

I’m still trying to get UNNATURAL SELECTION up as well as developing THE BLACK SITE with Grimmfest films. Also, I have just partnered with a producer on another project, a horror set in New Orleans. Soon to be announced!

HORROR MUSIC LEGENDS

The current GOBLIN line-up consists of Claudio Simonetti on keyboards, Bruno Previtali on guitars, Cecilia Nappo on bass and Federico Maragoni on drums.

Simon commented: “Claudio and I have much in common. We met in Rome whilst both of us were working on Dario Argento’s ‘Phenomena’. Soon after, he scored Lamberto Bava’s first ‘Demons’ film whilst I scored ‘Demons 2’. From that moment on our paths diverged, but over the years I have liked and respected Goblin’s film music hugely. It will be fantastic to appear on the same bill and share with a London audience a varied evening of horror and Giallo tunes with full video backdrop.’

FrightFest 2021 Quest for new writers

FRIGHTFEST RESURRECTS ITS NEW BLOOD QUEST FOR NEW WRITERS

New Blood FrightFest 2021

FOURTH YEAR FOR THE NEW HORROR FEATURE WRITERS INITIATIVE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH QUEENSBURY PICTURES

As Arrow Video FrightFest stalks the dark recesses of the big screen again, the search resumes for new writers in the horror genre through its New Blood initiative. New Blood reunites FrightFest with Giles Edwards of Queensbury Pictures with its mission to find emerging UK-based writers dedicated to the genre and nurture their projects from script to screen. Queensbury is ultimately interested in buying the finished script rather than the idea, and so, this year all successful final candidates if selected should be able to send even a rough draft of the first ten pages of their script through with their acceptance.

Already the scheme has delivered two new projects: Broadcast Signal Intrusion, written by Phil Drinkwater and Tim Woodall and directed by Jacob Gentry (The Signal) which World Premiered to enormous acclaim at SXSW 2021 and will come home to screen at FrightFest this August and The Change, written by Carina Rodney and optioned by acclaimed producer Jennifer Handorf (The Borderlands, The Chamber).

The successful shortlisted applicants will workshop their ideas in a group setting under the guidance of top industry professionals and genre experts. Among this year’s panel are 2021 Variety Magazine ‘Director to Watch’, recipient Prano Bailey-Bond, acclaimed writer / director of CENSOR, Jed Shepherd, co-writer of 2020’s genre sensation HOST and Rob Savage’s upcoming secret Blumhouse project, Najarra Townsend, actress and producer, THE STYLIST and Queensbury Pictures’ Giles Edwards.

Giles Edwards of Queensbury Pictures said, “Having already achieved the initial aim of New Blood, with the discovery of the phenomenal script Broadcast Signal Intrusion from Phil and Tim which then exceeded our wildest expectations as a finished feature, and the amazing Jennifer Handorf falling for Carina’s *absolutely wild* The Change, we’re more adamant than ever that the cream of UK genre writing talent is out there, just waiting for the opportunity to wrench our collective gut with their visions of true terror.”

Greg Day, co-director of FrightFest added, “For FrightFest to be continuing to support and enable aspiring scriptwriters to have this opportunity is very gratifying, especially as Giles and Queensbury Pictures have proved that they really mean business and are not just playing industry lip-service. Good luck to the New Blood class of 2021.”

The New Blood networking and workshop event will be held on Thursday 26 August, the opening day of this year’s festival, in a Central London venue.

Applications are open from Monday 12th July with potential participants asked to submit a 400 word proposal through the dedicated New Blood page on the FrightFest website and if selected, each writer is expected to submit the first ten pages of their script idea. The deadline is Sunday 26th July.  All successful applicants will be notified by the 31st of July and then will be requested to send over their sample script pages. All participants are expected to pay for their own travel and accommodation.

FINDING SOLACE IN A STUBBORN WORLD

DERREN BROWN

2nd September 2021 | Bantam Press | Hardback | £20.00

‘Derren Brown is a mine of wisdom, humanity and kindness – everything we need to sustain and nourish ourselves.’
ALAIN DE BOTTON

Derren Brown, internationally bestselling author of Happy, considers the value of difficulty in our lives while reflecting on his own experiences of challenges and change. Perhaps it is in those times when we are forced to cope with adversity that we find the most meaningful rewards.  As he navigates middle age, love and small talk, he dispenses with self-help platitudes and wonders if perhaps we need to more comfortably embrace uncertainty.  Is anxiety in fact a pointer for growth?

In chapters that take us back to the scene of his own childhood humiliation, to lonely evenings while on tour, and to the stress of a house move, Derren explores the reality that when we feel most alone we are often most connected to others and the flow of life.

Drawing on Derren’s own experiences, this is a profound and practical guide to finding value in sadness and strength from difficult times, to help discover meaning and grow from there.

Derren Brown - A Book Of SecretsDERREN BROWN began his TV career in 2000 with a series of specials called ‘Mind Control’, redefining the genre of magic for intelligent, modern audiences and making his name synonymous with the art of psychological manipulation. Derren has played Russian Roulette live, led the nation in a séance, successfully predicted the National Lottery and created a zombie apocalypse for an unsuspecting participant after seemingly ending the world. His one-man stage shows have garnered a record-breaking five Olivier Award nominations for Best Entertainment and won twice. His 2017 US debut show SECRET won the New York Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience and returned for a sell-out run on Broadway in 2019.  In Autumn 2021 he embarks on his new theatrical tour of the UK with Showman. He is also the author of Happy, Tricks of the Mind, Confessions of a Conjuror, A Little Happier, and Portraits. He recently had a hit with audio book Derren Brown’s Bootcamp for the Brain.

Derren Brown reveals his caricature of Sir David Attenborough

Derren Brown reveals his caricature of Sir David AttenboroughDerren Brown, probably better known for his mind-boggling TV stunts and putting well-known faces on the spot with his psychological trickery, has also carved a reputation as a painter and caricaturist, having published Derren Brown: Portraits in 2009 and enjoyed several solo exhibitions  at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery.

Commentating on his portrait of Sir David Attenborough, Derren said: “Given the nature of caricature, I never imagine the subjects will like them. So I don’t make a point of showing people their portraits. But this is done with huge affection and the utmost admiration for an extraordinary man, and a staggering career, which I have followed all my life.

His recent Netflix film A Life On Our Planet is important and wonderful. I’ve tried to capture the figure of authority here: we should all be listening very carefully to what he has to say”.

He has also recently painted Freddie Mercury, Donald Trump, Marilyn Monroe and Willem Defoe. He is currently working on a portrait of David Bowie.

Works from his private collection are now available to own as originals or limited edition prints. Many of these acrylic paintings featured in his book Portraits, and some have appeared in his television shows.

Sean Hogan steps inside the world of UK Horror

Press release (UK): Acclaimed British filmmaker & author Sean Hogan steps inside the world of UK Horror with two works of metafictional film criticism

Sean Hogan steps inside the world of UK Horror

Sean Hogan, best known for his films The Devil’s Business and Little Deaths, has created two works of metafictional film criticism – England’s Screaming and its follow-up, Three Mothers, One Father.

England’s Screaming is both a fictional history of UK genre cinema and a state of the nation address, taking films from 1945’s Dead of Night to 2018’s Possum to create a blackly satirical portrait of the country we live in today. It has a foreword by Jonathan Rigby and the cover art is by renowned illustrator and designer Graham Humphreys.

Its semi-sequel, Three Mothers, One Father, widens the scope to look at several stand-out works of Eurohorror, and in the process weaves a narrative examining the parlous state of modern gender relations.

Both books are written in the vein of David Thomson’s seminal Suspects; tapestries of characters from notable genre films that extend and intertwine their fictional biographies beyond the boundaries of the movies that spawned the

The author’s first publication in this style was his 2017 monograph on Death Line, the cult British horror film from 1972. In his introduction to that book, author and critic Kim Newman wrote: ‘Sometimes the best response to a painting or a poem or any work of art is another painting, poem or work of art.’

These two new books take this notion even further, employing genre films spanning the last century as a lens through which to look at where we are now.

Sean Hogan is a writer and filmmaker living in Margate. His film credits include The Devil’s Business, The Borderlands, and Future Shock! The Story of 2000AD. England’s Screaming is his first novel-length work of fiction, and he is currently at work on a non film-related novel, as well as a new film, Other Places.

England’s Screaming is now available to order in hardback via PS Publishing:

Nicholas Vince Interview

Ahead of Horror Channel’s broadcast of HELLRAISER and HELLRAISER II: Nicholas Vince, who played the Chatterer Cenobite, reflects on tackling monsters, his new one-man show and his love of Vincent Price.

Nicholas Vince Interview

Nicholas Vince as The Chatterer on the set of HELLRAISER with Ashley Laurence & Clive Barker. Photo courtesy of The Clive Barker Archive.

Horror Channel are broadcasting HELLRAISER and HELLRAISER II: HELLBOUND. How does it feel being part of such an iconic franchise?

I feel extremely fortunate. And I’m grateful to Horror Channel for screening the films, as there’s a chance for people who’ve not seen them before to watch them. I’ve introduced the films at various screenings and I’m always delighted there’s often a 50/50 split between fans of the films and first timers.

You’ve spoken a lot about your experiences of playing the Chatterer Cenobite. Looking back, how much would you say it has defined your career?

Oh, it made my career. It’s given me the chance to work with some really interesting young film makers such as MJ Dixon, Paddy Murphy, Stewart Sparke, Katie Bonham, Federico Ichi Scargiali and Lawrie Brewster. And it led to writing comics for Marvel in the 1990’s. It’s opened many doors for me, particularly in terms of meeting fans of the films who’ve been very supportive too.

I AM MONSTERS!, your well-received one-man show, reveals the depth of affection you have for Clive Barker. How would you sum up the impact he’s had on your life?

The impact has been extraordinary. Clive is not only extraordinarily talented, he’s been very encouraging of all my writing and acting. When I decided to write some short stories in 2012, the first thing I did was re-read his Books of Blood to get some insight how great short stories are written.

The show reveals not just your love for playing monsters but how much, at certain times in your life, you’ve felt like a monster yourself – being gay but remaining closeted during the 70s and being born undershot and having to have major surgery. How much of your life experiences informed your portrayal of the Chatterer?

Nicholas Vince Interview

Good question. At the time, I was mostly concerned with the mechanics of making the costume and mask work, and hitting my marks on set. I did use a technique I’d learned during a mime class at drama school, where we had to bring in a cardboard box, put it over our head and make it into a character. We weren’t allowed to decorate or cut it. That makes you both vulnerable and gives great freedom. Firstly, you can’t see the audience, which is freeing; but you also have to rely entirely on your imagination and experiences to give the character life.

It’s taken me decades to finally articulate a back story for Chatterer which I’m happy with, which I did in the short story Prayers of Desire.

Is it true that the design of the Chatterer was partly inspired by your own facial reconstruction?

Yes, that’s right. I mentioned to Clive a documentary I’d watched about facial reconstructive surgery, during which I realised some of the techniques shown must have been used on me when I was 19 years old. It was really a brief conversation and I’d forgotten about it until after filming when Clive pointed out he’d remembered and incorporated what I’d described into the design of the Chatterer.

Are there plans to stage I AM MONSTERS in the future?

Yes, I’m working on some dates for later in the year for the UK and USA.

How important is the ongoing connection you have with your fans?

That’s very important to me. It’s something which I was taught by Clive. I used to meet up with friends when he did book signings at Forbidden Planet in London. I once saw him sign for seven hours without a break and he drew a picture along with his signature, and whilst he did that he chatted, answered any question and also asked questions. I’ve always tried to emulate that attitude when I meet fans, or as Clive would say ‘enthusiasts’.

Nicholas Vince Interview

Nicholas Vince on stage in I AM MONSTERS!

What ‘monster’ movies do you personally admire? Have you a favourite?

I’m a big fan of Vincent Price and the Edgar Allan Poe films he did with Roger Corman. My all time favourite is MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH. What I love about Price in that film is that the monster he plays, Prince Prospero, isn’t a classic monster makeup, but he’s chilling. Of more classic monsters, then it would be Lon Chaney Jr. as WOLFMAN, Claude Rains as the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and Robert England as Freddy Kreuger.

If you had the choice of playing any of the iconic monsters, which would it be?

The Abominable Dr Phibes, as played by Vincent Price.

Finally, what can we expect to see you in next?

They’ve just released Ashley Thorpe’s BORLEY RECTORY onto Amazon Prime in the UK, narrated by Julian Sands and starring Reece Shearsmith. There are three other feature films nearing completion and aiming for release later this year.

I’m also working on my third volume of short stories, which has my Chatterer origin story as the title, PRAYERS OF DESIRE which is due out at the end of Spring 2020.

HELLRAISER is broadcast on Friday 3 April @ 22:50 and HELLRAISER II: HELLBOUND on Friday 10 April @ 23:15.
