NYX UK gives April a bloody blend of global masterpieces, headed up on 5th April at 9pm, by JUAN OF THE DEAD, Cuba’s first zombie horror film, directed by Alejandro Brugués. With its cheesy title and cheerful mix of politics and splatter, it struck a chord with audiences worldwide and is acknowledged as a modern genre classic. Another memorable cult classic, showing at 9pm on 12th April, is CHOPPING MALL, fondly remembered for its quirky premise and over-the-top action. Directed by Jim Wynorski, it presents a unique and entertaining twist on the slasher genre, set within the confines of a high-tech shopping mall.
On the 19th of April is the 9pm Channel premiere of South Korean hit THIRST, directed by Park Chan-wook. The winner of the Jury Prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, its blend of horror, erotism, and philosophy makes it a provocative and compelling examination of the darkness within human nature. Equally as compelling is Corin Hardy’s chilling THE HALLOW, which streams on the 26th April at 9pm. Masterfully blending horror with environmental and folkloric themes, it creates a tense atmosphere that’s as beautiful as it is horrifying.
Continuing on Thursday nights at 11pm is THE HUNGER, the horror anthology series that ran from 1997 to 2000, captivating audiences with its feast of eroticism, horror, and the macabre. The second series, hosted by the iconic David Bowie, kicks off with “Sanctuary,” a tale of a crime novelist haunted by both literal and metaphorical ghosts in a remote monastery, This season, marked by Bowie’s enigmatic allure as host, skilfully navigates through stories of immortality, cursed love, and the dark consequences of human actions, blending psychological depth with the supernatural.
The UK’s prime destination for horror fans is celebrating the birthdays of two masters of the dark arts. First up on Monday 1st April Lon Chaney and the channel celebrates the life of the legendary actor with the timeless classic THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Then on Wed 3rd April, there is a double-bill of DEMONS and DEMONS 2 in honour of Italian horror maestro Lamberto Bava.
Wednesday nights continues with ELVIRA’S MOVIE MACABRE, which revives the iconic horror hostess Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, as portrayed by Cassandra Peterson and FrightFest Saturday Scares with Alan Jones continues, with our genial host introducing and discussing his favourite films.
